Workshop Description

Learn how to plan, prepare, shoot and process stunning images of the Milky Way, Aurora Borealis, star trails, full moon, enormous panoramas and much more. Want to create stunning time-lapse videos of sunsets fading into the Milky Way rising in the east? Curious about astronomy and the night sky? If your answers are “yes,” then this workshop is for you!

Much more than a photo tour, this workshop will allow you to take away a deeper understanding of BOTH astronomy and photography. You will understand how the night sky moves, what there is to photograph at night, how to choose the best dates and times for your shots, what is the best equipment and settings to use, and finally, the secrets of landscape astrophotography post-processing and editing.

Based at the northern edge of the Twin Cities, we’ll have our choice of dark sky shooting sites within an easy hour’s drive. In case of rain, we’ll head downtown to develop our cityscapes and light painting techniques. Either way, you’ll be out late shooting, rain or (star)shine!

Equipment needed: Any camera with a manual (M) exposure setting, a tripod and a headlamp or other flashlight, preferably with a red light setting. Other helpful equipment includes gaffer’s tape, a focusing loupe and a remote shutter release. You will get the most from this class with a digital camera and fisheye, wide angle and street-zoom lenses. Standard lenses (e.g., 18 – 55 mm) are perfect. You will also want to bring your laptop for our daytime image post-processing lessons.

Canon owners and others whose cameras lack a built-in interval timer capability will need either a remote switch/release with a locking mechanism or an external intervalometer/timer for the star trail and time-lapse portion of the workshop.

Workshop fees do not include food, lodging, or transportation. If you don’t live in the area, you may wish to make a hotel reservation in the Twin Cities area for Friday and Saturday since we will be out shooting late each night. A Special Workshop Rate: $129 / night has been arranged for you at the Country Inn & Suites, Vadnais Heights, MN, hotel; just mention booking discount code: MTGSHA.

Workshop begins at 7 pm, Friday, April 26, 2019, in the lobby of the Country Inn & Suites, Vadnais Heights, MN. Workshop conducted Friday evening – Sunday, April 26 – 28. Workshop concludes at 5 pm, Sunday, April 28, 2018.
